The No.6 2008 IBA Shark Island Challenge Trials

May 7th, 2008 by Joshua | Posted in Contests, Sponsors

The No.6 is proud to announce its launch in to the
Australian market through its sponsorship of ‘The No.6
Brett Young Trials’ and becoming the official
bodyboard of the 2008 IBA ‘Cronulla Shark Island
Challenge’.

The No.6 has been founded as an ‘anti’ statement by
artisans in the sport of bodyboarding, a collective
who believed the focus of progress in innovative
riding and equipment had been lost. This led to the
forming of The No.6, a company dedicated to the future
development of high performance equipment.

The No.6 strives to meet the demands of core
enthusiasts, to become the breeding ground for the
progressive, the artistic, the anti-establishment, and
the individuality that Bodyboarders have become
renowned for.

Mark Dale, founder and head designer at The No.6
explains, “Our team has over 25 years in board
manufacturing and foam development industries. This
creates an inspirational environment for design,
blending art and high concept with proven performance
templates. That is The No.6.”

The No.6 set’s itself apart by releasing the latest 3D
deck concepts, core developments, concave bottom
technology, and all deck graphic capabilities.

Its focus on innovative riding and equipment makes The
No.6 the perfect match for the Cronulla Shark Island
Challenge, the proving ground for high performance
bodyboarding in Australia.

A injured Jacob Romero gained vengeance for his brother Jonah who was nocked out in his 5th as Jacob placed second with a sprained knee he hurt earlier in the day.

The Women’s Semi final saw some great heats with Claudia Ferrari and Lei Ali taking stealing the show with smooth combo surfing gain them access into the finals. Rita Pires killing every wave thrown her way. Aoi Koike was able to follow suit and progress into the finals.

In the end it was a last minute barrel to ARS from Aoi in the final that took the confirmed the win from Rita Pires with Claudia and Leila following a respectable 3rd and 4th. Whilst media speculation suggests that Surfing sensation Kelly Slater (Florida USA) will retire this year at 36, Bodyboarding’s living legend Mike Stewart (Hawaii USA) has confirmed that he will once again contest the IBA World Men’s Tour at 44 years of age. Mike has been a prolific figure in Pro Bodyboarding since it first boomed in the 80’s and he has maintained to be a the forefront of the sport ever since. To put things into perspective Slater has won 8 World Titles whereas Stewart has won 10. “I am on an organic diet and I have never felt better or fitter” said Stewart. “I am on a mission to see how far I can push myself both physically and mentally and with some of the new training methods that I have adopted hope to do well on this years Tour.” Stewart has been an inspiration to several generations of riders and some believe that he will challenge the worlds best until he is 50. “That would be cool. I think that if you eat right and look after yourself that would be possible.” Bodyboarding has long been considered a young persons sport but Mike is re-writing the record books and inspiring some of the older riders to follow in his footsteps.

Guilherme Tamega (BRZ) is another former multiple world champion who is making a comeback in 2008 after taking a year off at 35. Tamega has relocated to the USA and is also living in Hawaii with Stewart.

The IBA 2008 International Men’s Tour and USBA national is about to be launched on Oahu’s North shore with the IBA Pipeline Pro and both riders will be hard to beat with so much experience and a home court advantage.

Jeff Hubbard wins 2007 USBA Prone Title and Scion Hawaii Ledges Pro

December 27th, 2007 by bbr | Posted in Contests

usba_maui_banner_600.jpgThe Bodyglove Bodyboards USBA TOUR
PRESENTS THE SCION HAWAII LEDGES PRO 2007
In conjunction with the Foam Company Maui and Custom X

DAY TWO

Day two of the SCION Hawaii Ledges Pro started off with similar conditions to day one. The early rounds took to the water at 8 am, with big international names taking down USBA top riders. Ryan Hardy was one of them who took out Brian Stoerh with former NYBB Pro finalist Josifran Araujo taking second with a big roll to finish the heat.

usba_maui_specs_ars_seq.jpgOther early round standouts were Willy Pertrovick who took out Paulo Barcellos with some of the bigger inverts of the competition. In the third heat of the day Jason Bitzer was able take out top USBA rider Jeremy Wright with Kauai’s Kainoa Lumb taking second. Jeff Hubbard cruised through his heats with ease and composer into the semi finals. Jacob Romero put on a great show in his first heat with a clean display of inverts and solid combos.

Heading into the quarters there where big names going down such as Josifran Araujo, Jason Bitzer and Happy Zurkowski, all not dealing well with the now windy. Advancing through the next Quarter Round was Ryan Hardy and Brad Mebust who took a combined effort to take out USBA stars Willy Petrovick & Jacob Romero.

Breaking up the men’s pro quarters and semi’s was the Women’s pro final in which Kelly Gordon of Maui put on a stellar performance holding off the international apponents. Kelly had Mariana Rodriguez on her coat tails but Mariana was never able to better her second score.

Heading back into the Men’s Pro Semi, Australia’s Ryan Hardy continued his strong campaign in his first ever USBA event, he was able to land himself in the finals along side Kauaian Bud Miyamoto who was also the Ledges Pro Drop Knee Champion. The following semi saw Jeff Hubbard gain the highest maneuver score of the competition being awarded 9.5 and 10’s for his spin to clear air reverse combination. Following suit was Sacha Specker of South Africa who had been surfing well consistently all day long.

usba_maui_podium_all1.jpgThe conditions in the final were trying for the riders as a rainsquall hit almost to the second of the start flags going up. This however made for some cross-shore wedges that Ryan Hardy and Jeff Hubbard where able to use to launch large-scale inverts and ars’s. When the final buzzer blew it was Jeff Hubbard with two large air roll spins that narrowly edged out Ryan Hardy’s spin to roll and invert for the win. Thanks to our sponsors SCION Hawaii, Bodyglove Bodyboards, The Foam Co and Custom X Bodyboards for the their support of this amazing event.

DAY 1

The first day of competition started out with the amateurs hitting the water in the cleanest conditions of the day. The first heat saw Colin Black(oahu), Reese Yanorio (oahu), Jesse Walsh (Maui), Mark Gravacio (Oahu )battle it out in the blue water peaks. Colin and Jesse progressed, while Reese and Mark were knocked out. With Reese out of the competition, the Amateur title was awarded to New Jersey’s Dillon Druz.

Newly crowned amateur champion, Dillon entered the water in semi final two alongside Kingsley Uaiwa (Maui), Josh Kid and Casey Bibbs. The current champ struggled to find form in the testing conditions while Kingsley and Casey found some workable sections to gain the scores necessary to progress to the final. The waves turned on for the 20 minute action packed amateur final. From the beginning of the final Kingsley and Colin were exchanging a high score battle all the way through to the finish. Colin’s best wave was one of the highest scores of the day that consisted of a tube followed by a two roll combination. Kingsley responded fast with a tube followed by a clean roll and spin. This kind of form continued through to the final minute and in the end it came to an extremely close finish with Colin just ousting Kingsley for first place.

The next to head into the water was the DK pro with the some of the bigger sets rolling in due to some uprising wind swell, and with some big DK hitters including the USBA tour Dropknee champion David Hubbard. Advancing out of the first round was New Jersey’s newest DK guru Jason Bitzer who was poised to keep his forth place rating in the overall standings. Others who advanced were the likes of Micah McMullan, Bud Miyamoto, Jeff and David Hubbard, Leroy Kaiwi, Willy Petrovik, and Cass Sadona. The DKrs had some stiff competition with the Hubbard (Kauai) brothers muscling their way into the final along with Bud Miyamoto (Kauai) and Leroy Kaiwi (Maui) following suit.

The final was one of the closet heats in USBA history with Bud edging out current and now 2007 USBA Dropknee Champ Dave Hubbard with the scores going to a tiebreaker. Tomorrow’s heats will consist of the entire Men’s Pro roster and the Women’s Pro finals.
