The North Shore Chronicles 2/23

February 23rd, 2008 by Joshua | Posted in Uncategorized

I told you guys I don’t follow contests too well. If I’m out I’m going
to go surf. Most guys who surf these events stick around to watch but I
just want to get barrelled all day. The whole purpose of doing a
contest is to get as many good waves as possible and to surf them as
best you can. Then you get the reward of being in the next heat. That’s
the biggest reward you can get when surfing the pipe event due to the
crowds out here. Sand bars are epic. Pipe is firing and town is about
to start acting up huge here along with the south shore which means
that there is going to be some big crosss up swells coming to
california and here as well. Everyone should brace for a huge fucking
bowling pit. Everyone’s going to get barrels in the next few weeks from
So Cal to Hawaii. Guaranteed cuz I’m putting it out there. Now let’s
all intend to make it happen or I’ll just take all of them for my
greedy ass self.

Weird journal entry huh? TrIpPpErrrr!!!!

The North Shore Chronicles 2/21

February 21st, 2008 by Joshua | Posted in Uncategorized

10:23am feb. 21 and the final day of the event. If it isn’t it goes to show how much I don’t follow this kind of shit. The only thing I want to see is deep hollow barrels and aerials out the bowl with spinners in the air and on the section or in the hole. So far I’ve seen Tamega smoke a few waves, Kainoa do his thing, Andre be a freak and pull off shit on such a small board I don’t know how he does it and Andrew lester with real tight surfing. But taking the cake was Ben Player’s backdoor usage of the hole. He treated Backdoor like a dirty alley slut looking for a hit of crack. He just waved it in front of the crack head and then stepped on it and obliterated it before she could smoke it. Real good surfing. On one wave he barely snuck out from the cover before the closeout and really made himself look good in the process.

Onward. Now I’m bored talking here. Laters…

Early round big name standouts came in the likes of Jessica Becker and Aoi Koike along with many other charges tearing the 4-6 ft surf on hand. Some dark horse performances from Emma Roby from Australia made it interesting into the later rounds and Christina De Lima even though not progressing in here heat pulled it to what was the biggest backdoor barrel of the day from both the men and women divisions.

Heading back into round 5 of the Men’s Pro Esbeirto Berentes made more progress heading through heat six and on to the final day of the Men’s Pro. Ross Mc Bride made his round 5 heat with flying colours but was stopped by Mr. Berentes in round 6.

A injured Jacob Romero gained vengeance for his brother Jonah who was nocked out in his 5th as Jacob placed second with a sprained knee he hurt earlier in the day.

The Women’s Semi final saw some great heats with Claudia Ferrari and Lei Ali taking stealing the show with smooth combo surfing gain them access into the finals. Rita Pires killing every wave thrown her way. Aoi Koike was able to follow suit and progress into the finals.

In the end it was a last minute barrel to ARS from Aoi in the final that took the confirmed the win from Rita Pires with Claudia and Leila following a respectable 3rd and 4th. Today,Tuesday Feb 19th the Men’s Division was called on by event organizer Bob Tomas. This was a great call as a peaking 6-10 ft west-northwest swell had reached the North Shore as predicted.

There where many standouts in the preliminary heats with names such new comer Esbeirto Abrentas (BRZ) hitting a home run with the first perfect 10.00 score of the event in round 2. Following his lead was Esbeirto’s Brazilian Country man Lucas Nogales moving through the first three rounds of competition.

Heading into the mid of competition there was no shortage of action with Pablo Prieto Serrano (GERM/ENG/CNRY) having a solid run of barrels, one with a combo of three rolls, that progressed him on into day two for the 2008 Pipeline Pro.

Ross Mcbride (CA) used his years of Pipe experience to rack up one of the highest scoring combination of waves with a 9.1 and 8.65 in the final heat of the day. Another California Nick Stratom put on a dark horse effort racking up the tube time and progressing through two rounds of competition!

South Africa’s former 2x world champ Andrea Botha was in his true form once again, laying down heavy moves and doing what he needed to do to get on through the next round!

More to come tomorrow with a slight drop in swell and starting with the Womens USBA 2008 Pipeline Pro presented by the Association of Womens Bodyboarding and The Duke Kahamoku foundation. Also the next two rounds of the Men’s pro will commence during the day’s competition as the NW swell begins to return in the afternoon!

The North Shore Chronicles 2/19

February 19th, 2008 by Joshua | Posted in General

Contest is on and it isn’t small either. Second reef bombs every now and again and a good show of talent is doing their thing this morning with Naoshi Grady getting top honors with the second reef double up bomb pit. Don’t ask me how the contest went down as I was not feeling it being there for most of the day. I strained a hip socket area, my sacro-iliac joint to be more precise, and it has caused me to forfeit my drop knee slot to someone more adequately physically qualified for the position. In my first heat I just didn’t get the right waves. I got a sizable drainer that pinched at the end and a semi decent scorable tube that wierded out. Other than that my waves were lackluster and all I needed was a 2. something. Oh well, that’s what I get going into an event without a clear and present destination emotionally. Always something to learn. Other than that the waves were remarkable and I’m sure pipeline on surfline is the cam of the day. Like I predicted. PUMPING!!! ALL!!!!!! WEEK!!!!! And I’ll do it again somewhere soon!!

The waves were pretty poop this morning at about 4 foot hawaiian but really clean for the drop knee action to go down, unfortunately for me I have a small sprain in my sacroiliac joint on the left side which prevented me from throwing the tail in some directions but didn’t hinder me from floundering around on my belly with the trampolene crew out there. Oshi Grady is in town for the event and jarret lau looks like he’s got his equipment together and tight. This evening got a lot bigger and I feel that the event will be going down tomorrow and at least 6 foot on the sets and of good consistency. We’re going to have a good event gang. GET READY!

READY TO RUMBLE…

All indications are pointing towards a start Tuesday 2/19/08 for the 2008 IBA Pipeline Pro, along with the starts of round one of the USBA women’s Pipeline Pro Presented by the Association of Womens Bodyboarding and The Duke Kahamoku Foundation

Here’s the forecast…

Tuesday: EPIC. Surf: 6-10 ft. - head high + to double overhead occasionally 12 ft. and epic conditions.
Wednesday: GOOD. Surf: 5-8 ft. - head high to 3 ft. overhead occasionally 9 ft. and good conditions.
Thursday: EPIC. Surf: 6-10 ft. - head high + to double overhead occasionally 12 ft. and epic conditions.

The record books have been re-written with the biggest field in the events history coming to the Islands for a chance at competing at the Worlds best wave. Over 180 of the planets best riders crossed their fingers and 144 were accepted.

Whilst media speculation suggests that Surfing sensation Kelly Slater (Florida USA) will retire this year at 36, Bodyboarding’s living legend Mike Stewart (Hawaii USA) has confirmed that he will once again contest the IBA World Men’s Tour at 44 years of age. Mike has been a prolific figure in Pro Bodyboarding since it first boomed in the 80’s and he has maintained to be a the forefront of the sport ever since. To put things into perspective Slater has won 8 World Titles whereas Stewart has won 10. “I am on an organic diet and I have never felt better or fitter” said Stewart. “I am on a mission to see how far I can push myself both physically and mentally and with some of the new training methods that I have adopted hope to do well on this years Tour.” Stewart has been an inspiration to several generations of riders and some believe that he will challenge the worlds best until he is 50. “That would be cool. I think that if you eat right and look after yourself that would be possible.” Bodyboarding has long been considered a young persons sport but Mike is re-writing the record books and inspiring some of the older riders to follow in his footsteps.

Guilherme Tamega (BRZ) is another former multiple world champion who is making a comeback in 2008 after taking a year off at 35. Tamega has relocated to the USA and is also living in Hawaii with Stewart.

The IBA 2008 International Men’s Tour and USBA national is about to be launched on Oahu’s North shore with the IBA Pipeline Pro and both riders will be hard to beat with so much experience and a home court advantage.

The North Shore Chronicles 2/16

6am in the morning and sore…

My legs were cramping all day yesterday in the water. I feel out of shape and achy all over my body. The muscles haven’t had to scramble out of the way of sets in a long time and boy I am paying for it at the moment. At least I know what I got to train and what I got to stretch. I can honestly say that the waves are definitely getting smaller and today will probably be a vland/off the walls/backdoor day. It could even be a sandbar day the way it was dropping last night. Joe Grodzen’s been ringing me left and right hoping that he’ll be able to get a room going at a place behind the big ugly indian head at Rocky point up on the hill. Today is check in day at the beach park. Anything goes down that’s interesting or entertaining, I’ll let you know. if you’re looking for drama go to www.sherdog.com. This is a bodyboarding site dedicated to getting jiggy on the boog. I got to take a shit. I didn’t get the coffee but my ass is about to start shooting mushy stink missiles and I can’t do that sitting in my friends chair in her house.

My house, different story, but not here.

Gone shitting…..

The North Shore Chronicles 2/15 II

christaloa.jpg

He hurt it a few weeks ago and it’s a little sprained but other than that he’s got his shit together and is still looking good and in good contention for a win. Ryan Hardy looks very confident in his skills and there’s a few young talented Aussies that are continuously flipping around and doing aerial gyrations at intense speeds and landing incredibly gently and really using the rotation to throw the compression to the side. (Jesus, did I just say all that science-y shit?). Kainoa was out there with a fucking stand up paddle board fucking scaring the shit out of all who were in his path. In fact, as I was surfing my second session today he was able to do a round house in front of me into the foam ball, aim his nuclear weapon at me, and hold his posture and hang in there until he passed me. I thought it was an amazing feat of strength if you ask me……… and all the fish who were in the area were running for their lives because of the liquid brain matter coming out of my ass from the fear I was going through. but that’s what I get for judging Kainoa. That’s what anyone gets for judging another person. Dodo in the pants. I’m a dodo boy so don’t get too close cuz I might touch you and give you manpoopbugs.

I surfed at dawn this morning and the boys were blowing it up. hardy, player, and Kingy had their game on very nicely. Myself on the other hand needed a good slap in the ass. I got power under my body again and it means business, so the refocus is on and the work to ride bigger waves is going to be a long road for me again. Surfing in California for so long has hindered my big wave riding ability pretty harshly and I must get used to surfing in a crowd again. Although I know I can have my pick of the bombs when they come in, I know I’m ill-prepared for the power this morning. Tide dropping and backwash coming, things got strange for a little while but the Aussies did well due to the fact that they surf slabs and surf them sometimes by themselves at “ass flogging to death by way of crickett stick wielding, angry mob of Singaporeans” heights. Youtube Brendan Newton and look for the pic of the guy holding his face together and click it. We boogs in the U.S. and in Hawaii could use a coast with that kind of shit on it. I found a few in the icy regions of Alaska that were good but not like what they got and not all over the place. I feel that the sand right now on the reef isn’t quite in the right place and the swell could use a touch more west in it. The new swell should clear things up right and the comp should be epic. The evening session was awsome. I saw the sun go down and the mokes in the parking lot were stoned as hell and having a good time in the sundown. I’m going to sleep. Happy Birthday Danny Fuller, and the world is going to have a cosmic party.

Infinite love is the only truth, and everything else is an illusion.

Good Night. I’m delirious.

The North Shore Chronicles 2/15

It’s 5:28 a.m. in the morning and I’ve been up since 4:45 a.m. I watched the surf late last evening and saw a few guys get tubed. Nothing special that would make the pipe the spectacle she can be but she showed us her tits a few times and they were big and round. Few makeable bombs came through and the Australian contingent was out there doing their best to get a few of them. Saw Dave Hubbard and Vaj Lederer in the Ehukai lot and rapped with them into the darker hours and they said they saw Kingy get a third reef bitch that he slapped in the face and got totally throated on. They also said they saw him walking up the beach with a strained knee, like he hurt some ligament in his leg or something. Let’s intend that his knee just needs some ice cream and he’ll be okay for the event. He’s on alot of people’s finalist cards for this event and alot of people want to see him do well. I’m starting to arouse and I got to get the fuck out the door in the dark and get me a water from the Kammies gas station as I walk down the bike path to listen to the menehunes whisper in the darkness of the early morning to me with their intention of getting their message to me. I can guarantee the beach will have a few night bats with their boards bouncing on the beach, ready to go out, warming up, getting the blood flowing through their legs and minds as they ready to paddle out into the darkness 5 minutes before the sun starts tickling the horizon with her rays of warmth. I’m fucking out of here! I’ve been surfing the last few months in cold 4/3 wet suit California with a few select riders and now I’m going to warm water and a mob of blow-ins from around the world and my boys from home taking each other out for good ones. It’s going to be an adjustment but I’m ahead of the game because I am aware of the challenges presented to me today and I plan to make full use of my day and blend in as if I don’t exist.

I’ll write later the next time I get in front of this computer.

Taloa. Over and out.
